'Stella' is our most popular sweet Cherry variety as it is self-fertile and will fruit without a companion tree for cross pollination. Sweet Cherries can be eaten straight off the tree in summer but you may have to compete with the birds as it is one their favourite summer fruits as well. The fruit is usually red skinned and red fleshed. Other varieties to look for are 'Summit', 'Reiner' and 'Compact Stella' which is a semi-dwarf form of 'Stella', perfect for the smaller garden. Sour cherries are just that and usually require cooking before eating. They are popular for jams, jellies, fruit pies and for making Kirsch. All sour cherries are self-fertile so you just need 1 tree to get fruit. Most are red skinned with yellow flesh. Look for 'Tangshi' and 'Montmorency', two reliable selections.
